✨Solstice Season Greetings, Happy Holidays Merry Christmas and Every Best Wish for 2025✨
Dear Reader
Solstice Season Greetings, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you walking alongside me this year!
I know this can be a busy, consumer-driven time, yet for those in the Northern Hemisphere, the Winter solstice reminds us that the living world’s rhythms encourage us to rest. So I’ll keep this brief: thank you for your support and curiosity. Your deepening eco-creativity and interest in ecoliteracy hearten me as we face one of the greatest cultural shifts of our time—learning to create, teach, and live with Earth and social justice always in mind and heart.
On 3 January 2025, it’ll be exactly 30 years since I arrived in Ireland from Aotearoa New Zealand, the home of my maternal and paternal ancestors - they left in desperate times after the Great Famine. A friend once suggested my work in Ireland—healing relationships with forests, guiding creatives, educators, and cultural workers toward eco-social practices—might be a form of ancestral healing. It’s a thought that stays with me as I strive to be a good future ancestor.
Over the past year, many of you have supported me as I’ve moved from one-off ecoliteracy courses to creating a dedicated community for ongoing ecoliteracy learning and peer support. It’s been a major undertaking, supported by 30+ Founding Members and wonderful Honorary Haumea Ecoversity Members. Thank you!
So it feels fitting that on my 30th Irish anniversary—Friday, 3 January—I’ll launch Haumea Ecoversity Community, a new, independent peer-to-peer membership for ongoing ecoliteracy learning and support.
HAUMEA ECOVERSITY COMMUNITY Launching 3 January 2025
Our community welcomes artists, architects, creatives, dancers, educators, filmmakers, crafters, makers, poets, rewilders, researchers, dramatists, writers, community and social practitioners, cultural leaders, and changemakers—anyone ready to inspire a brighter, wiser, and more compassionate future. Advocates and supporters for Haumea Ecoversity, we welcome your interest too.
Why create Haumea Ecoversity Community? When I first began teaching ecoliteracy in 2019, many of you asked for ongoing support—recognising this as a profound cultural shift. You wanted more ways to connect with like-minded people and find meaningful opportunities to collaborate. Some felt overwhelmed by eco-social challenges and needed a supportive space; others sensed a need for holistic values to guide their work amid today’s intersecting environmental and social crises. Together, the Haumea Ecoversity Community will help us navigate these complexities, inspiring and amplifying truly regenerative creativity for a wiser ecological era.

Wishing blessings to you, your friends, your families, and all the beings you share these solstice days with.

Haumea Ecoversity, founded by Dr Cathy Fitzgerald in 2019, is a peer-to-peer ecoliteracy learning platform. Its mission is to empower emerging and mid-career creatives and cultural professionals with holistic, transformative learning so that they can confidently address environmental and social challenges through deep ecological awareness.

Drawing on Cathy’s Hollywood Forest Story (begun in 2008), her doctoral research The Ecological Turn (NCAD, 2018), and post-doctoral studies, supported by the Irish Arts Council, with Earth Charter International (UNESCO Chair for Education for Sustainable Development ESD), Haumea Ecoversity promotes a global shift in creative practice learning aligned with life-sustaining ecological realities. In collaboration with philosopher Dr Nikos Patedakis (DangerousWisdom.org, California), Cathy has developed innovative, peer-to-peer courses grounded in ecoliteracy and the UNESCO-endorsed Earth Charter's holistic principles. These courses support creatives and cultural professionals in diverse fields, helping them engage with their communities and audiences.

By 2024, over 360 creatives have participated in our courses, forming a growing community of eco-creative practice. Participants have become learning leaders to benefit their audiences and communities in Ireland and internationally. Some have gained recognition and support from Creative Ireland, Irish Arts Offices, the Irish Arts Council, and similar bodies abroad.

We believe integrated values education and ecoliterate creativity are key to fostering equitable, sustainable, and peaceful communities.

Stay connected for tips, eco-creative news, and updates as we continue to support this vital shift in creative education for personal, collective, planetary, and intergenerational well-being. HAUMEA ECOVERSITY Hollywood Forest, Killedmond, Borris, Co. Carlow, Ireland
