🌀 Haumea Ecoversity: Your ecoliteracy questions answered (and a note on the storm)

✨Haumea Ecoversity
Community Membership
is now OPEN✨

Hello Reader

I’ve been receiving some amazing feedback on my YouTube videos and emails about the Haumea Ecoversity launch, so I wanted to address a few common questions and share an update about today’s live Zoom call.

  • “Thank you for describing Ecoliteracy… brilliant, Cathy!”
  • “Go Earth Charter! Could it really address war and conflict?”
  • “How much time do I need to join Haumea Ecoversity?”
  • “I’m struggling daily to align my life with my values… can your community help?”

I’m so grateful for comments like these. They show how crucial ecoliteracy is right now, from nurturing our sense of belonging to creating an ecologically-conscious frame of mind in the face of today's intersecting environmental, social and political crises.

Problem 1:“I never realised ecoliteracy was such a big cultural shift—am I ready?”
Solution: Ecoliteracy indeed connects the micro with the macro, grounding us in our caring for Earth, each other, and all communities of life. It’s a journey, and our Haumea Ecoversity Community is here to guide and support you every step of the way.

Problem 2:“What about time commitment? I’m juggling a full-time creative practice.”
Solution: We’ve built our membership to be spacious and flexible—an estimated 2–4 hours a week is enough to make real progress. We host group live Salons every other Tuesday, with different learning pathways for beginners, intermediate, and advanced learners. You can dive deeper or just stay connected—your choice.

Problem 3:“I feel like there’s a silent majority struggling to align our lives with our values… can we form an eco-spiritual community?”
Solution:Yes! In fact, one of the biggest reasons we moved from one-off courses to a membership model was to foster ongoing connections. This is the place to find mutual support, mentorship, and collective inspiration—so none of us face these challenges alone.

Storm / Live Call Update

  • I’m planning to host a free LIVE Zoom call today, Sunday 5 Jan, at 7 pm (Irish/BST), 8 pm (EU), 2 pm (PST).
  • However, a major storm has caused red/orange weather warnings and power outages across Ireland and the UK (including my home!). If the link doesn’t work at call time, it means we still have no power.
  • In that case, I’ll send a message later today to postpone the call to Monday at the same time and extend the sign-up window by another day to accommodate.

One follower asked yesterday if I would write her a letter for her art grant application to join Haumea Ecoversity for the year. I am happy to do this and have previously supplied letters to others who've been applying to arts act, agility and bursary awards. Just hit 'reply' to ask me about this.

Haumea Ecoversity 2019 - 2025

Haumea Ecoversity, founded by Dr Cathy Fitzgerald in 2019, opened as a pioneering peer-to-peer ecoliteracy learning platform on 3 January 2025. Our mission is to empower emerging and mid-career creatives and cultural professionals with holistic, transformative ecoliteracy—enabling them to address environmental and social challenges through deep ecological awareness.

Drawing on Cathy’s Hollywood Forest Story (initiated in 2008), her doctoral research The Ecological Turn (NCAD, 2018), and post-doctoral studies—supported by the Irish Arts Council—with Earth Charter International (UNESCO Chair for Education for Sustainable Development, ESD), Haumea Ecoversity champions a global shift in learning aligned with life-sustaining ecological realities. Collaborating with philosopher Dr Nikos Patedakis (DangerousWisdom.org, California), we have developed innovative, peer-to-peer courses grounded in ecoliteracy and the UNESCO-endorsed Earth Charter’s holistic principles. These courses have supported creatives and cultural professionals across diverse fields, helping them engage more effectively with their communities and audiences.

By 2024, over 360 creatives have participated in our courses, forming a vibrant, growing community of eco-creative practice. Many have become learning leaders, benefiting audiences and communities in Ireland and internationally—with some gaining recognition and support from Creative Ireland, Irish Arts Offices, the Irish Arts Council, and other organisations abroad.

We believe integrated values education and ecoliterate creativity are crucial to fostering equitable, sustainable, and peaceful societies. Stay connected for tips, eco-creative news, and updates as we continue catalysing this vital shift in creative education—supporting personal, collective, planetary, and intergenerational well-being.
