🌀Haumea Members🌱 🌍 Irish contribution to Earth Charter 25+ UN COP30 Global Ethical Stocktake
Published 6 months ago • 5 min read
.Thursday last week, 19 June 2025, members of the Earth Charter community in The Netherlands gathered at the Peace Palace in The Hague to plant a special tree, in honour of 25 Years Earth Charter. It is a "Davidia Involucrata" which symbolises peace and hope - because of its special white flowers in springtime and its green leaves in the form of a heart. The tree was welcomed with a special ceremony created by the planters
The Earth Charter is a Peace Charter, and its logo is the Peace dove over the world. The Earth Charter Secretariat and Earth Charter INternational education courses are housed in the UN University for Peace in Costa Rica. Pillar 4 of the Earth Charter details deep understandings in the practice of peace, and so wonderful to see this Earth Charter Peace Principle and this big heart-leafed tree close to the Peace Palace where the Earth Charter was launched in 2000. We've been asked to bring a small bottle of water with us for this tree.

Dear Reader,
Just over a week ago, we gathered in the vibrant community garden An Gairdín Beo in Carlow town for our Summer Get Together. Co-hosted with the County Carlow Environmental Network, it was a truly special evening—a local gathering with global resonance.
We began with a beautiful Cosmic Walk and were then joined by special guest Professor Emeritus Peter Blaze Corcoran, who Zoomed in from the USA. From a small Irish town, on a warm summer’s night, we were connected to a wider world of ecological and ethical learning.
Peter’s talk offered moving reflections on the Earth Charter—ahead of its 25th anniversary celebrations at the Peace Palace in The Hague (1–3 July)—and on his lifetime of using it to inspire integrated action in higher education and beyond.

🌿 Representing Ireland & Haumea Ecoversity at The Hague
I’m honoured to be representing the Haumea Ecoversity community and Irish creatives at the Earth Charter 25+ celebrations in The Hague next week.
I’ll be sharing how our work has:
Energised and localised the Earth Charter in Ireland, particularly through creative practices
Supported Phoebe Cope in translating the Earth Charter into Irish for adults and children
Helped amplify values-based learning in communities across Ireland
I’ll also share:
How Angelina Foster and local creatives have brought the Earth Charter to diverse communities—most recently through a youth theatre group who performed an Earth Charter-inspired play in the Irish Senate
How creative engagement—through poetry, prayer flags, and storytelling—can reach hearts and minds where facts and policies fall short
How this work aligns with calls for a Global Ethical Stocktake ahead of COP30
This journey began as an unexpected post-doctoral collaboration with Californian philosopher Dr Nikos Patedakis, myself, and many of you in the Haumea community. ________________ 📜 New: Earth Charter Position Paper for the Global Ethical Stocktake
If you’ve ever wondered how the Earth Charter fits into international efforts today, don’t miss this:

A short, powerful read about how the Earth Charter is:
Fresh and relevant after 25 years
Supporting new calls for integrated, values-based education and action
Embracing Indigenous wisdom and holistic thinking 📎 [Read the position paper - click the Green button below ]
🧩 Mutirão means a collective effort (like the Irish meitheal)—a reminder that we’re in this together.
The Earth Charter is one of the most powerful peace and ecological documents of our time.

A huge thanks to Caitriona Boyle, Niamh Cunningham and Mary Carty—Haumea members who will be joining Martin and me at The Hague.
We’ll be bringing Angelina Foster community handmade Earth Charter prayer flags and banners, sharing the creativity and care of Irish communities on an international stage. I’ll be thinking of you all from under the Peace Tree at the Peace Palace.

PS 🕊️ Final Thought from Peter Blaze Corcoran
Peter left us with a powerful way to understand the Earth Charter’s wisdom in action:
“Think of the four Earth Charter pillars backwards:
We cannot achieve Pillar 4: peace, democracy, and nonviolence,
without achieving Pillar 3: economic and social justice,
which relies on Pillar 2: ecological integrity,
and none of these are possible without Pillar 1: respect and care for the community of life.”
Earth Charter 25+: an inclusive, accessible inspiring ecological ethical compass for our collective futures.

Haumea Ecoversity.com, founded by Dr Cathy Fitzgerald in 2019, offers a pioneering peer-to-peer ecoliteracy learning community membership — The Haumea Ecoversity. We also offer bespoke 1-1 Mentoring and online and in-person ecoliteracy training CPD -continuing professional development for cultural organisations, local authorities, art colleges and universities. Our mission is to empower emerging and mid-career creatives, educators, researchers and cultural professionals with holistic, transformative ecoliteracy—enabling them to address environmental and social challenges through deep ecological awareness.
Drawing on Cathy’s pioneering ecosocial art practice, The Hollywood Forest Story (initiated in 2008), her doctoral research The Ecological Turn (NCAD, 2018), and post-doctoral studies—supported by the Irish Arts Council—with Earth Charter International (UNESCO Chair for Education for Sustainable Development, ESD), Haumea Ecoversity champions a global shift in learning aligned with life-sustaining ecological realities. Collaborating with philosopher Dr Nikos Patedakis (DangerousWisdom.org, California), we have developed innovative, peer-to-peer courses grounded in ecoliteracy and the UNESCO-endorsed Earth Charter’s holistic principles. These courses have supported creatives and cultural professionals across diverse fields, helping them engage more effectively with their communities and audiences. By late 2024, over 380 creatives participated in our courses, forming a vibrant, growing community of eco-social creative practice. Many have become learning leaders, benefiting audiences and communities in Ireland and internationally, with some gaining recognition and support from Creative Ireland, Irish Arts Offices, the Irish Arts Council, and other organisations abroad. We believe integrated values education and ecoliterate creativity are crucial to fostering equitable, sustainable, and peaceful societies. Stay connected for tips, eco-creative news, and updates as we continue catalysing this vital shift in creative education, supporting personal, collective, planetary, and intergenerational well-being.
